Many small island states and low-lying countries are already keenly experiencing the threat of climate change induced sea level rise, extreme weather, flooding and associated climate impacts. Working to transition to a more ocean facing - Blue Economy – is a positive step to take in the face of such impacts. Blue economy can include diverse components, from established ocean industries such as fisheries, tourism and maritime transport, to emerging activities such as offshore renewable energy, aquaculture and marine biotechnology.
In particular, the blue economy should specifically recognize and include sustainability and equity concepts, such that progress towards a blue economy can help achieve a range of UN SDGs, including most significantly SDG 14 (Life Below Water),
Blue Ltd works extensively to assist clients plan and transition towards a blue economy. Recent work includes provision of technical support on national Maritime Economy Plans for Pacific and Caribbean small island states, A Regional Blue Economy transition programme for the World Bank. Also, institutional capacity building work to provide hands on support to help countries plan how to operationalize Blue Economy functions.
